This page is dedicated to my younger sister
Sandi and her battle against brain cancer. Here is her story:
First I am going back 15 years to May 27, 1995. Sandi was a college
freshman at Wallace State University and on the Universtiy Dance Team.
We were both at home for a weekend full of weddings for high school
friends. On her way back to college that night, Sandi lost control of
her car going around a sharp curve in the road.
She flipped the car
many times and it ended up upside down in someones front yard. The lady
that ran outside was a nurse. She called 911 for a Life Flight
helicopter, she knew Sandi's injuries were life threatening.....for my
parents, that was a late night knock on the door that no parent ever
wants to get.
To make a long story short, Sandi had a Traumatic Brain Injury and a
broken collar bone. She spent 2 weeks in a coma. When she came out of
it she had lost 6 months of memory. She went through almost a year of
extensive physical therapy and rehab. She learned to walk again, drive
again and even started back to school while still in therapy. After a
full recovery from an almost fatal accident, she went back to school at
the University of Alabama and graduated with honors.
Now moving forward 15 years to May 2010......
Sandi is 33 years old and has been married to her husband JJ since
January 2007. She graduated with her Master's Degree in professional
counseling in August of 2009. She finally found a job as a mental
health professional counselor working with at risk teens and their
families in December of 2009. Everything in her life was perfect.
The end of April she started having some very sharp head pains with a
"whooshing" sound in her head. On Friday April 30th she drove home from
work, got out of her car, and her left leg would barely function. She
got herself in the door, up the stairs, and knew that something was
wrong.
Sandi called her doctor on Monday, May 3rd and they immediately set an
appointment for the following morning. That is a day that will forever
change our family and everyone who knows Sandi.
They did a CT scan, found a brain tumor the size of a lemon between her
frontal lobes and immediately put her in the ICU for fear that she would
have stroke or seizure.
On Thursday May 6, 2010 my sister had brain surgery. The Neurosurgeon
removed as much of the tumor as possible and closed off the blood
vessels that were feeding the remainder of the tumor. We were very
hopeful at this point. Later that afternoon the doctor sat down in a
conference room and told us the unthinkable. The tumor looked
malignant, it was being sent to John Hopkins and we would have the
pathology report back in 2 weeks........so we waited, and waited.
On May 19th the results were back. The first thing the doctor told my
sister are words that we will never forget....." You are now fighting
for your life". The tumor is malignant. Now the real battle begins.
I want my sister to focus on getting better instead of worrying about
how they will pay the medical bills. They have insurance, but she can
no longer work. I
have created the "Affirmation
and Inspiration Collection - Sandi's Fight" to raise money for
Sandi and JJ. Proceeds from the sale of these items will be donated to
them to help cover the expenses associated with her treatment of brain cancer.

June 21,2010 -This week Sandi completed her second full week of treatment. Treatment
consists of chemo, radiation, physical therapy and speech therapy.
Until this point her only real side effect was being extremely tired.
Unfortunately this week she started seeing another side effect....hair
loss.
July 5, 2010- Sandi just got the results from her MRI. The brain tumor is
shrinking and blood flow is still cut off to one side of it. This is
the news we were hoping to hear. The chemo and radiation are working!!
Her doctor was very happy with the results. Sandi is exhausted from the radiation. It is very draining on her body and her hair is falling out more.
July 10, 2010 - These are Sandi's words from her post on facebook
I have a friend staying with me who is a nurse
on a neurological floor in Huntsville; and last night she finally did
what JJ has been unwilling or unable to do.... which was shave my head.
It actually feels better now because I can stop stressing about losing
hair in the shower and elsewhere. Now I have about a quarter inch of
redish blond stubble on my head....
August 11,2010 - We got great news from her MRI. The tumor is stable! It is not growing.
August 25,2010 - She started back on chemo after a 1 month break. She now has a port for her IV. She will get an Avastin infusion (IV) every 2 weeks. In addition she will have 5 days of Temodar (at triple the dose she had previously) then 21 days off. She will be on this 5 day on 21 day off cycle for the next year.
October 11, 2010 - MRI results are good! The brain tumor has actually shrunk a small amount. She has lost over 20 pounds in the last 6 weeks. Her energy level is still low, but improving a little. Her attitude is great as the battle continues.
December 25, 2010 - Sandi continues treatment and is doing good. No new developments. The photo is from Thanksgiving weekend.
January 3, 2011 - MRI results. The tumor is stable and has no growth. The doctor is happy!
January 31, 2011 - Update from Sandi herself on her blog
"
Praise God!!! This morning my Neurosurgeon told me that she has never
seen someone react this well to treatment and that the majority of
people, given my diagnosis, are dead within one year; but that I am
still doing great in her opinion."
March 9 , 2011 - Sandi is still doing great. No growth in the tumor, she is still taking chemo (oral and IV), and her hair is starting to grow a little.
June 23, 2011 - Sandi's Tumor is still "stable" and showing no signs of growth. She has one more round of her oral chemo drug, Temador. Her Avastin infusion will now be once every 4 weeks instead of once every 2 weeks. She has been on both oral and IV chemo for one year now. We know she will feel much better now. Her next MRI is scheduled for June 11.
UPDATE - October 2011. Nothing new to report which is GREAT. Sandi
is doing good. She is still undergoing chemo, but only once a month. The brain tumor is
still stable - which means it is not growing and she is slowly getting
her hair back. Here is a new photo of her taken this month. I think
she looks beautiful!!
